How to prevent diabetes in cat

Diabetes is a serious issue even in pets like a cat. You would be alarmed to know that one in 100-200 cats runs the risk of becoming diabetic.  Though Diabetes is a condition that can be easily diagnosed and controlled improper management of diabetes could mean trouble to your cat. As you may know, diabetes is the result of a defect in the glucose metabolism in the body of the cat.

Type ll diabetes is the most common type of diabetes that the cats that are overweight, that have reached the age of 8 suffer from. Of all the breeds, the Burmese cats top the list of cat breed’s that is susceptible to diabetes

Prevention of diabetes

You can prevent diabetes in cats unless it is due to factors such as breed disposition. Some steps that will help you to prevent diabetes include

• Maintaining ideal body condition– you can get the cat assessed by the veterinarian to check if your cat is about the ideal weight and also has the ideal body mass and fat.
• Feed the cat with high-protein and low-carb diet– The high carbohydrate, low protein diet, especially the dry cat food diets, could make the cat obese and also stress the kidney and urinary tract health.
• Give your cat enough playtime– Playtime will ensure that the cat’s weight is maintained and it is stress-free.
• Annual examinations and evaluations– Irrespective of whether your cat has any problems or a vaccine to be done, make it a habit to take it to the veterinarian for a thorough investigation once in a year to uncover diseases and infections at the earliest and treat it immediately.
• Get blood and urine test done regularly for your cat– Diabetes can be easily diagnosed with blood and urine tests. Regular testing will help you detect it at the earliest.
• Avoid using steroids– The cats might be administered steroids to treat some other chronic conditions like asthma, skin allergies etc. Try to avoid using steroids unless you have no other option.
